DOES DR. CONE TAKE TEETH OUT AND DO ROOT CANALS?
No. We are a dental specialty clinic and we believe that there is value in having specialists with advanced training in a specific field perform the procedures that they are experts in. For this reason, we also DO NOT perform root canals, apply braces, place implants, or provide treatment for children’s teeth (except for complex cases when teeth are missing, misshaped, or malpositioned). Dr. Cone is world-class in one specific area of dental medicine only - Prosthodontics.
When I graduated from dental school at Tufts, my classmates and I had never treated a patient for veneers, we had only ever made 1 denture, taken out about a dozen teeth, we never placed implants, we finished at most 10 root canals, and we received no training with braces or Invisalign. Most people don’t realize that there are 10 different types of dental specialists and that each of these dentists is the subject matter expert in that field. A general dentists has a broad and shallow knowledge of many aspects of dentistry. However, they did not receive specialty training in any specific field of dentistry much like a family doctor or a general practitioner. General dentists have a very specific and important role to play as part of the dental ecosystem and so do dental specialists. If you needed heart surgery you would seek out a Thoracic Surgeon and not your family doctor. Broadly speaking, Oral Surgeons are the experts for extractions and Endodontists are best trained to perform root canals. If you need cosmetic dentistry or complex full mouth rehabilitation, a Board Certified Prosthodontist is the best choice.
